Harris: The remote diaries of untamed nature

 

In early 2020, Nadia Arratibel, Ondarreta’s head designer, travelled from the Basque Country to Lewis and Harris Island in Scotland, in what would turn out to be her last trip before the pandemic. Following the rhythmic sound of weavers scattered throughout the island, Nadia takes the last boat to Harris in an attempt to discover the simple truth of the origin and worth of Harris Tweed®, one of the most appreciated fabrics in the world. As the ship sets sail, she enjoys the power of nature, solitude and rain, and reflects upon meaning and balance in the relationship between nature, industry and human beings.

Harris Tweed is the only fabric in the world with a designation of origin governed by the British Parliament. This law is applied under the supervision of Harris Tweed Authority®, a body which holds the exclusive authority to identify a cloth as authentic Harris Tweed® and ensure it was made from pure virgin wool dyed, spun and handwoven by the islanders in the Outer Hebrides at their homes.

 

At Ondarreta, we collaborated with Harris Tweed Authority® to develop our new collection cápsula Harris, which has been applied to our Aia and Lana families.

ONDARRETA + HARRIS TWEED : LANA FAMILY

Harris Tweed®is the only handwoven cloth sold around the globe. The cloth is woven from rustic local wool, spun by hand and dyed with natural pigments, mainly from lichens (Parmelia saxatilis, P.sulcata, and Parmelia omphalodes).

 

The wool is washed in soft peaty water before being dyed using dyestuffs from these plants and lichens, which also give Harris Tweed® its distinctive smell. Dyeing the wool before spinning it makes for a unique color palette, which reflects faithfully the landscape in which its weavers are born and raised.
